OK…. so maybe not the end after all, but this filter leads to data which is a hell of a lot more useful and actionable than having (not provided) in your organic traffic sources in Analytics. If you didn’t know (well you probably do as you are here) Google strips out keyword information for organic searches when users are logged into Google or if they are using the https version to search. This data shows up as (not provided) under organic traffic sources in Google Analytics, this is obviously not good news for SEO’s unable to see vital keyword information. In some cases I’ve seen (not provided) can be the single highest volume organic source which is not helpful in the slightest when all of this information is masked.

It doesn’t look like Google is going to change this situation any time in the near future, however there is hope:- Filters! Yes, by using a special filter within a Google Analytics profile we are able to extract some actionable data out of the (not provided) hell. Here’s how:

Note: You must have an Administrator account access to the profile you wish to do this with

1. Open up your favourite Google Analytics profile

2. Click on the Admin tab in the top right corner

3. Click on the Profile you want from the list

4. Click on the Filters tab

5. Click Add New Filter

6. Give the filter a name. I named mine ‘Not Provided Filter’. Imaginative I know!

7. Select the Custom Filter radio button

8. The below radio buttons should appear. Select Advanced.

9. We now need to tell Analytics to extract some data from the (not provided) attribute. Input the following into the boxes as shown below:

We are telling Google Analytics everytime it sees [any character]not provided[any character] to apply the filter and then to request the landing page that the user reached coming from a (not provided) term. We are then telling Google Analytics to display this information in the form of np -/landing page.

10. Click save and the filter should now be live

One thing to note here is that it may take time to generate the data, this does not re-write historical data unfortunately but any new (not provided) terms should start showing up in Analytics as the page where the user landed like below:

This data is much better than the below:

OK, so it’s not perfect and we still can’t see the actual keyword the user came in to the site on, however being able to see the landing page makes it much easier. From this data we can make assumptions of the key terms that the user came in on and this kind of data gives us much more actionable insight.

As Google continues to try and build Google+ up forcing users to be signed in for certain services, the (not provided) issue is only going to become worse. From my own Analytics profiles I have seen a massive increase in the volume of (not provided) terms compared to actual visible terms. This is obviously not the best situation when reporting to clients and for providing any insight, however the above filter does help in providing at least some kind of data. I must credit Dan Barker from Econsultancy who originally posted about this idea in 2011. I first read about this then and implemented it in an in-house position. Now that a year has passed I have hardly seen anyone use this technique, so thought it was about time to get it to the forefront of peoples minds. With rumours circulating that Chrome is going to release an SSL by default on search, (not provided) terms are only going to dominate our keyword reports on Analytics.

I hope this helps you in your quest for data and as always leave your suggestions/questions in the comments.

An Open Letter to the Bing Design Team

Dear Bing,

I somehow found myself on your site today, it’s been a while since I visited last but I was extremely curious when I was looking in Analytics that 1 visitor had came from a bing search query! I immediately hopped over to Bing to double check some rankings. What I discovered next horrified me to my core.

Your site pains me and not in that migraine pain kind of way, but the kind of pain that hurts to see that you are failing in every way when you could be so easily succeeding and taking the market share you’ve been ever-longing to steal off of Google.

I don’t personally use your site for searching – I use Google as it’s very simple, you just type in what you’re looking for and it will instantly give you your desired results. I don’t think this is the case with your site, it doesn’t even feel like a search engine but more like a photographers portfolio site. I literally forgot that there was the ability to search for things on your site, as when I entered I was so distracted at how slow your moving video background was moving.

Aesthetics are all well and good, but functionality is the key that will drive your revenue and increase profits – you don’t need me to tell you that (or maybe you do?). Have a look at my extremely in-depth analysis screenshot attached, there are several key things wrong with your design:

1. You have a moving background – Do you know how slow this loaded on my virtual machine? It almost crashed the browser

2. I don’t really want to hover over parts of the background to find out more, my aim is to search for the thing I came here to search for!

3. You may think that offering downloads for a browser toolbar will increase your market share, but am I hell going to download it or add any kind of toolbar to my browser (you’d be better bundling it into free software as a must-install)

4. What’s the Point? – I was expecting some kind of textual information here, when I clicked I was faced with a map of some ‘Point’ in Canada. I’m in the UK bing, detect my IP please.

5. There is no need to put ‘popular searches’ on your homepage. This isn’t Twitter, it’s not a popularity contest it’s a search engine!

I applaud your ambition and creativity and as a fellow web designer appreciate the aesthetic side of things, however why not keep it simple?

I have attached a new design for Bing you can even use this for FREE – take it as a gift and I won’t even take credit if Bing takes even 1% extra share from Google!

Keep it simple Bing

Kind Regards,

Malcolm Gibb

If you’ve not been hiding under a rock for the last 24 hours you should know by now from the intense flurry of tweets, duplicated blog posts and debate that Google has brought out a new tool for Google Webmaster Tools called the ‘Link Disavow Tool’.

Webmasters and SEO’s alike have been waiting or for a better word screaming at Matt Cutts for this tool for months now ever since Bing brought out it’s version of the disavow tool. Finally… now we have it – a shiny new tool – what are you going to do with it? Use it? Do you really need to?

The Year of the SEO

2012 has been a pretty rocky year for SEO’s with numerous large updates and ranking algorithm changes, but that’s just how we roll. Way back in April Google started sending out messages to Google Webmasters Tools accounts to those sites that it considered had unnatural looking link profiles – basically this suggested that the site in question was either buying/selling links, using Blog networks or showing an extremely high percentage of exact match anchor text pointing inbound to the site.

The original message warned that if the links in questions were not removed then Google would have to force a penalty on the site, it suggested contacting the webmasters of these links and getting the links removed then submitting a re-inclusion request to get re-indexed.

This was a warning that something was coming…something probably quite big and destructive. Indeed it was – as the next fish slap in the face for SEO’s came in the form an update to the algorithm rather nonchalantly known as Penguin on April 24th 2012. This update targeted spammy looking links, de-valuing weak links and effectively giving sites a ranking penalty.

The reason I write all of the above is for context, during this time I was working client-side for an unnamed brand – no matter the reasons behind it we did in fact get one of the dreaded GWMT messages of unnatural linking (purely an agency fault!) The rankings did tank a month later and they tanked pretty hard. Most of the SEO community at the time was shouting to ‘do as Google says’ and remove links, agencies even popped up out of nowhere charging to remove links from people’s sites that got hit.

At the time I was extremely sceptical about doing the whole removal of links and re-include thing, my opinion around that time was that of:

“If Google are asking us to remove links from our ‘unnatural looking’ link profile and then tell them when we are done, well then aren’t we just admitting we’re guilty of [x] technique of link building even if we aren’t and giving them free information of the type of ‘spam’ networks they are looking for?”

However from the powers that be they did eventually follow a link removal strategy based on advice from ‘experts’, suffice to say I no longer work there and their rankings still haven’t improved after 6 months.

Why divulge all of the above?

In my opinion the new Disavow tool is simply the same kind of crowdsourcing tactic Google is employing to gather information about bad networks and spammy links except now it’s fully automated!

Feeding the Beast

Scepticism doesn’t really go down that well in this industry, however that’s just me I like to pose hard questions about something new or shiny and truly discover how it works. My scepticism of the GWMT link messages being some kind of secret ‘bad link’ retrieval information of course didn’t go down to well at the time while others, even reputed experts in the field, were spouting all kinds of information and advice about removing links and submitting re-inclusion requests to Google. I’m not saying removing links was the wrong thing to do, in fact it was probably the right thing to do in certain cases, however everybody and their gran seemed to be doing it after discovering they had been ‘penalised’ by Penguin.

Most believe that Google’s algorithm is super complicated and can easily detect all of the over-used and spammy techniques naughty SEO’s use to game rank, however I really don’t believe it is that complicated as most people make out. Simply put, the modern web is insanely difficult to crawl and identify natural links vs. spammy links. Don’t you find it strange that Google sent out the GWMT messages then a month or two later rolled out Penguin shafting many blog networks and tanking ranks? Hmmm… I wonder how many of those who received a GWMT message fed Google the information they needed for Penguin.

What’s black & white (or both), is easily scared, runs away at the first sign of danger and follows it’s peers jumping off high surfaces? Hmmmm I wonder why Matt called it Penguin?

I was unaware that there were others in the SEO community that had my same viewpoint on this matter. Twitter seemed to be alight with people shouting about the Disavow tool like it was some godly gift from the god of all gods themselves. However after reading around, I finally found some real challenge to the bandwagon jumpers:

“On the other hand it could be another tool in Google war chest against links – first they crawled a set of known link networks and killed them, then they randomly killed a lot of sites rankings causing widespread panic among site owners who tripped over themselves handing in re-inclusion requests outing a number of their networks. This obviously gave more data to Google.

Now the Disavow tool would be another way for site owners to say ” These links are bad”. They get fed in and Google has more data to burn more sites. ”

Rishi Lakhani (source: http://econsultancy.com/uk/blog/10909-google-s-disavow-links-tool-the-experts-view)

Probably one of the most impressive things I’ve seen written all day from one of the most well respected SEO’s in the field. Rishi really hit a point here in that the Disavow tool is no more than a tool to feed Google ‘bad link’ information to burn more sites in the next update. I was even extremely surprised to see Rand Fishkin bow in with the same ideology:

Iain Bartholomew from 360Innovate was also one of the first to write about the sceptical side of the Disavow Tool:

If only – you advise your clients – Google had a link revocation facility then everything would be fine. Alas! After receiving your list it didn’t take long for that cunning Penguin to discover that perhaps there were more skeletons in the closet than you cared to admit. Oh dear.

And one last one from a well known dark grey hat forum really amused me:

This is nothing more than a bulk snitching tool dressed up as a solution to a problem it doesn’t actually solve. Google will be using the data it collects from this tool to clean up the web, discount bad links and hand out penalties left, right & centre.

The problem is there are so many SEO’s that don’t really know what they are doing. They are not really sure what is wrong or why they have being penalised. It’s these kind of webmasters that will flock to the Disavow tool in the thousands reporting every link they ever bought or built to Google even when it’s not a low quality link.

But What about Negative SEO?

The naysayers will most likely bring up the topic of Negative SEO and how post-Penguin negative SEO can easily take down competitors, i don’t disagree that negative seo is an issue. However the Disavow tool, no matter how you use it is not going to protect you from numpties using automated tools such as SENuke and Xrumer.

I’ll leave you with some words of wisdom from Gianluca:

Final Thoughts

The Disavow tool, in my opinion, is nothing more than an easy crowdsourced tactic from Google to get information on a mass scale about methods of linkbuilding, link tactics and networks and then use this information to clean up. Google’s interests don’t lie in the natural rankings of your site or about how much revenue you’ve lost due to ranking drops, they only care about how relevant their search terms are to it’s users – that is after all why they exist and if their search results weren’t relevant they couldn’t make any revenue from advertising.

I would suggest only using the Disavow tool in extreme situations where the only two options available to you are either a) Start again on a new domain or b) Admit to Google you tried to game the system and beg for forgiveness. It is no surprise that in Matt Cutt’s video he explains this tool should *only* be used by those in extreme situations that feel they have a penalty, this is most likely just a lure to gather the most spammy of link networks.

OK, so I work in Digital Marketing and have done for quite a while now mainly in the realms of SEO and PPC and it’s a pretty awesome area to work in to tell you the truth. However Digital Marketing is a new and emerging sector and is not a traditional career path for many young grads. Many digital marketers progress or fall into careers in digital marketing from other roles such as web development (me included!), off-line media, customer service roles and even accountancy. There are many different paths into the digital world and many different reasons people take those paths.

As a young industry, and due to the lack of official qualifications required, digital marketing covers a vast number of disciplines from search engine optimisation, display advertising, data analysis to pay per click advertising and attribution modelling. Due to this many job titles in the industry are new and simply made up to fit the roles. Roles such as ‘Social Media Guru’ have cropped up with the emergence of social media and the large part it plays in corporate life, however many of these jobs did not exist 10 years ago.

Looking through LinkedIn and various specialist Digital Marketing job sites you can often find some ridiculous digital marketing job titles that contain words like ‘awesome’, ‘Rock Star’ and ‘Guru’… but really, do you REALLY need a job title that describes how awesome you are? Isn’t that just a sure-fire way to #fail?! I list some of the most ridiculous job titles I’ve witnessed over the years.

1. SEO Rock Star

Seriously? Rock Star? Are you going to strum your SEO awesomeness in front of a crowd of hundreds of avid fans? No… You might have skills, but you’re certainly not a Rock Star. Calling yourself a Rock Star in SEO is a set up for failure when you can’t deliver the results your company is asking for. Not that you also don’t sound like a pretentious a-hole either.

2. Growth Hacker

This is a new one I witnessed on eConsultancy of all places. What exactly does a Growth Hacker do? Hack Growth? How can I hack growth? Apparently they are a mix of coder and marketer (actually explains me a bit), but come on this is a stupid job title that has no substance. Might look shiny on your business cards, but I’m sure 99.9% of people won’t know what you do and you probably couldn’t explain it to them anyway.

3. Senior SEO Guru

This one riles me up as bad as the Rock Star title, not only do you have to be a ‘Guru’, but you have to be a ‘Senior Guru’. That just conjures up images to me of an old wise, green, pointy eared guy in a toga building links and conjuring up pivot tables of awesomeness with some invisible force.

4. Social Media Visionary

What exactly is a Social Media Visionary? Can they see the future? Can they revolutionise the way a company interacts on Facebook? I’m pretty sure most of the population could do this job if they have a profile on Facebook.

5. SEO Ninja

This one might sound awesome and cool and all things ownage, but this one is actually one of the most common job titles I see on a regular basis. I don’t know how many SEO Ninja’s are out there, but I guess they have the power of stealth to their advantage.

6. Pay-Per-Click Prophet

No Joke, I have actually seen a job title advertised as this. Had to look at it twice to believe it, I’m pretty sure the population of Prophets who have awesome PPC skills is relatively small. As a religious icon you must lead the company to good fortune utilising your expert PPC skills. Seriously, just advertise for a PPC Manager – I would be more likely to apply.

7. Commander of Data

Commander of Data? Sounds like you should be commanding a starship or the like. “Must be a wizard in Excel”, “Must be able to command large amounts of data in a meaningful way”. Really who comes up with this rubbish?

8. Link-Building Champion

This one is not so bad, links might spout out of your pores like the beads of sweat when you’re challenging a lion in the Colosseum but calling yourself a ‘Champion’ is just setting yourself up for failure when your weak link building tactics get wiped out by Google’s next update.

9. Blogging Evangelist

I thought ‘Evangelist’ meant preaching the word of God? What does a Blogging Evangelist do? Preach the word of a company across the web? Sounds too airy-fairy for me.

10. Social Media Guru

Social Media Guru? Really? I could sit in my underwear all day on Facebook and Twitter and call myself a ‘Social Media Guru’. Even my Gran knows how to use Facebook, she’s probably more of a ‘Guru’ than some of the cowboys operating in the Soc Med field.

Got your own stupid digital marketing job title? How about creating your own with a stupid random digital marketing name generator I created. (by the way my own job title is actually ‘Chief King of SEO and Awesomeness’.

Like every SEO I am a complete information junkie for the latest trends in SEO and often find myself overwhelmed with the sheer amount of information available to me on a daily basis. For many over-connected SEO’s it can be a job in itself to source the best SEO information from an overwhelmingly large number of blogs, feeds and tweets. I thought I would list the top 10 best SEO blogs that I read on a daily basis to keep up to date with the latest trends and information. By no means a definitive list, but these are some of the top and most respected SEO blogs you SHOULD be reading!

#1 SEOMoz + YouMoz

Why I read it: As a PRO member of SEOMoz I find the blogs and Q&A sections to be hugely valuable sources of information stemming from like-minded professionals especially in the YouMoz section where posts are user generated. There are some deeply interesting SEO topics discussed in there that would be hard to find elsewhere. The SEOMoz official blog also contains promoted posts from the best of the user generated YouMoz posts as well as brilliant insight from the SEOMoz team. Rand also hosts a short WhiteBoard Friday video which often gives some nice advice, although I still take an independent approach and don’t take everything they say as gospel.

#2 Search Engine Watch

Why I read it: I really like Search Engine Watch, they often have great posts on the latest trends in the SEO world from latest algorithm updates to tips on content strategies and link building. SEW has been around for as long as I can remember and the best thing I like about it is that they also post about other channels that interest me such as PPC and Analytics. The only downside is that because of all the other channels they are not a purist SEO blog and articles can often be hit or miss.

#3 Inside Search – Google Official

Why I read it: The Official Google Search blog is THE place to always check up on. Google post in detail about their latest updates to algorithms (albeit not in advance ), insights about current search trends and new features. Posts are few and far between, but when they post you better be sure and read it! Posts are generally not about SEO in general but more focused on Google Search trends and insights, but this information can often be invaluable to your search efforts. Well worth subscribing their feed into your reader!

#4 Search Engine Land

Why I read it: Search Engine Land has been around for years and is by far one of the most updated and respected SEO information sources on the net. Posts are fast and furious and SEL is probably one of the most updated and frequent SEO blogs on the net. SEL covers both SEO, PPC and the search industry in general and gathers its posts from a variety of authors. Most of the posts on SEL are user-generated and although most posts are generally high quality I often find it can be a hit or miss situation with SEL, some sub-standard posts seem to slip in there from time to time. Because of this I list it down at #4, it is still a definite read and should be subscribed in your feeds!

#5 SEO by The Sea

Why I read it: SEO by the Sea run by Bill Slawski is a niche in itself. Bill covers topics ranging from search technologies, patent applications and algorithmic changes while taking a unique approach to writing. SEO by the Sea is a great read for insightful ideas behind SEO and search technology. Bill often writes posts that challenge ideas and engage conversation such as the recent Can you automate and Patent SEO. If you haven’t been there yet head on over and subscribe.

#6 Blogstorm

Why I read it: Blogstorm updates it’s Blog less frequent than many of the others listed, but most posts are of much superior quality and uniqueness than many other blogs that write posts daily. They often seem to be on the ball and write about changes in the search landscape in detail as they happen which can take other blogs a while to respond. Definitely worth checking out once a month or so!

#7 Blind Five Year Old

Why I read it: Probably a relatively unknown blog in the SEO community, but Blind Five Year Old run by AJ Kohn is a great read with a fun twist. I stumbled across this blog a few months ago through SEO by the Sea (#5) and often find myself reading through AJ’s blog posts in my feed list. I find his posts extremely interesting, not only does he write around unique concepts, but goes into a great level of detail to explain the idea while taking a uniquely fun twist such as his recent post about Twitter Cards.

#8 Econsultancy

Why I read it: Econsultancy is not a blog purely focused on SEO, but provides some very good reading on all topics of digital marketing. Econsultancy is well worth reading as they are a widely accepted industry leading organisation in digital marketing and provide some great industry reports, insight and case studies. Although posts are generally not about SEO, link building or technical SEO techniques you can gain some real-world digital marketing insight and up to date trends through their work with large brands. Great for learning about cross channel trends from real world studies, search topics are generally far and few between but an excellent source of information nonetheless.

#9 Search Engine Journal

Why I read it: Some SEO’s may be surprised to find SEJ this far down, but I couldn’t place it any higher in my opinion. It’s still a well respected and industry recognised search marketing blog with some very useful posts, although I feel the quality of posts has dropped along the wayside over the last 12 months and I find that other SEO blogs are posting a much higher calibre of posts than SEJ. Still a decent read and mixes tactical and strategic search topics as well as the search industry in general.

#10 <del>Matt Cutts</del>

Why I read it: I would have placed Matt Cutts blog in the #10 spot, but he rarely posts anything regarding SEO on his blog nowadays. Although as the Google Spam Lord himself, every SEO should be aware of Matt Cutts and take heed of anything he says (although you don’t have to agree with him!). He will often be a bit sly in announcing upcoming changes to Google algorithms such as tweeting so it’s well worth following him on all of your social channels and readers anyway.

Well that was my list of top 10 SEO blogs that you should be reading, it’s not a definitive list but the best of what I read on a daily basis. I have many more sources of information and get a lot of my reading lists from twitter peeps I’m following (follow me @malcolm_gibb). My Google Reader subscriptions are overflowing, so I often need to make a top list folder to keep the best and most frequent updated SEO blogs in. I will be updating this list with some more resources as time goes on

What are your best sources of information for SEO trends, insights and techniques? Is there a blog missing here that you think should be in the list?

Google released a blog post last Friday indicating they have intentions to release a ‘mute this ad’ button to Google Display Network ads. In recent months there have been many updates to Google Adwords including an entire user interface re-design. Google is stating that this latest addition is a positive step for advertisers and users, although surely giving users control over what ads they see is counter-productive for advertisers.

In Google’s latest announcement they say that within the next few weeks they will be adding a small [X] button in the upper right hand corner of ad units. This will sit alongside the already existing ‘Adchoices’ button displayed in the corner of each ad unit which already allows the user to edit their ad preferences. The [X] button will act as a mute button for the ad meaning that the user will not see that particular ad again. However muting an ad will mean the user will only mute an ad from a specific ad group, meaning that they may see over ads from the same advertiser from a different ad group or campaign.

Google says that:

we believe it’s an early step in the right direction of giving users control over ads, while helping marketers and websites deliver ads that perform better.

Although they may have a point in that users should have greater control over what ads they can and cannot see on-line it raises concerns for advertisers who rely on impressions for display network ads. Instead of advertisers having control of what ads the user sees the user will now be in control. Users already have the opportunity to turn off ads through the Adchoices button in the top right corner of ad units.

There will be those who argue that if a user does not want to see an ad they will probably not convert to a qualified lead anyway so why show them an ad in the first place? Won’t this change lead to higher quality leads at a lower cost? Well probably if you are running Google Display on a CPM basis as the more people turn off your ad the less impressions you will show. Although I can envisage campaigns such as retargeting or managed placement campaigns being negatively affected as people ‘mute’ the ads never to be seen again until another ad from another ad group is served.

I also fear that this change can and will be abused by competitors, Google stated that:

The feedback this provides will also help improve our ads over time

Google are almost suggesting that they will use data they get from people ‘muting’ ads to alter the way they serve ads. Much in a similar way as quality score is used to serve text ppc ads.

Competitors in theory could abuse this system by systematically ‘muting’ their targeted competitor’s ads over time giving Google the signal that those ads are irrelevant to that audience and effectively decreasing the likelihood Google will serve those ads over their competitors ads.

As a user I am in favour of this change as it is true that there are some irrelevant ads being served and greater privacy is always a good step in the right direction, however as an advertiser I am against this change. It almost undermines the Display Network model and while it may be true that some benefits will come in the way of tighter targeting to more qualified leads I can see this change affecting specific advertising models specifically re-targeting and managed placement campaigns.

Thought I would take some time to review one of my all time favourite PC games after the latest release of the series – Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion. SOASE isn’t a new game, the first title in the series – Sins of a Solar Empire was released over 4 years ago in February 2008 from Stardock/Ironclad Games and since then has had two follow up expansions - Sins of a Solar Empire: Entrenchment and Sins of a Solar Empire: Diplomacy. If your not familiar with the game, and I know many people aren’t it’s an epic real-time strategy set in space around three playable factions – the TEC (Trader Emergency Coalition), Advent and Vasari.

If your not a fan of space games then have a read of some of my other posts, otherwise read on!

Released on 12th June 2012, SOASE:Rebellion has been the long awaited sequel to the SOASE universe and trust me I’ve been waiting a long time for this game! Rebellion adds a new depth to the original game and whereas Diplomacy and Entrenchment were expansions to the original game, Rebellion is a stand-alone expansion hence it’s price of roughly £25. The biggest additions to the game are the new Titan class ships are a type of super-capital ship and completely dwarf existing capital ships, these truly monsterous ships deliver tremendous firepower and can single-handedly stand up against huge fleets.

The second big addition to the game is the introduction of new playable factions – this is probably the most notable update. In the original SOASE universe players could only play one of three races, TEC (Humans that desire peace and profit), Advent(Pseudo-Religious race of Humans) and Vasari (Aliens rampant on destroying everything), however Rebellion sees the addition of playable factions within these races. Each race is split into Loyalist and Rebel factions and each comes with their own unique research trees, Titan ship and corvette class ship. The TEC coalition has split and divided them into loyal and rebel factions where the rebels are bent on destroying any xenos species and concentrating on military efforts while the loyal TEC are more concerned with defending their home worlds and building trade. The rebel TEC faction brings the exciting ability of being able to ally with pirate and neutral factions while also gaining credits from bombarding worlds – I guess I like this more as I tend to play TEC more than any other race.

Rebellion also brings a long awaited update to the graphics engine which is meant to improve particle effects and enhance textures. When SOASE was released 4 years ago the graphics were outstanding and I believe they have stood the test of time as the graphics are as beautiful as ever (as the gallery below shows) the update doesn’t overhaul the graphics, but there is a noticeable differenced compared to the previous releases. I truly think SOASE has some of the best graphics of any game. I would recommend a decent graphics card and processor for this game though, especially playing against the AI as things can start to slow down when there are hundreds of units and multiple players – this is my only gripe about Sins of a Solar Empire even though I have a decent spec computer of a Q9450 Quad core processor and Nvidia 9800GT graphics card (although saying that it is about 6 years old now ).

Overall Sins of a Solar Empire: Rebellion is a brilliant game, single player games against the computer can last hours/days and even months across multiple stars in a vast universe. With Sins of a Solar Empire you can start a game and lose 5 hours or even a day without noticing! Although there are no major updates in single player campaigns or back story to Sins I still believe it is one of the most underrated and playable strategy games of all time. Stardock\Ironclad Games have really hit the nail on the head here in Gaming and are one of the top producers in my opinion, Stardock also have some other cool software such as WindowBlinds to skin Windows desktops! I think I know what I’ll be doing for the next month .

Running a blog you are inevitably flooded with spam comments. Fortunately Akismet helps in this aspect by identifying spam comments although I still get to see the vast majority, and as a link builder myself find some of the comment spam attempts hilarious. For those of you that don’t know, blogs gets flooded with comment spam from automated spammers trying to build links to their site usually known under black hat seo techniques, although there are legitimate forms of comment marketing. Here I list some of the most funny and outrageous blog comment spam I have received on my blog over the last few weeks.

Update:
I had to come back to this post and update with this recent comment:

‘Cat Dandruff Shampoo’ commented:

Lawl I just noticed, you have the same name as I do. We both think the same way. Anyway, I’ve been stopping by your homepage lately especially when I’m bored and have nothing to do.

I’m flattered, but I know my name and it’s definitely not anything to do with anti-dandruff feline shampoo!

Thanks for the comment Keshawn on the post I will certainly take your advice into account! I think this is some kind of paradoxical humour but I’m not sure!

If you want to get read, this is how you souhld write. “Keshawn” on 08/06/2012

I loved this one from a user called ‘Marketing Seo’:

I don’t spam people, in fact I hate it. For matters of ranking your keyword on baidu, the world’s second large search engine, it takes me only hours because I use totally my own private method based on my oen experiment. I provide Ranking Baidu overnight service on fiverr and you may see a big number of my customers’ feedback for my excellent service. Yes, that’s right. I prvide Ranking your keyword 24 hours on Baidu top 10 list. You may head to my service on fiverr clicking the link below: [link removed]

I will certainly stay up the good paintings sir!

whoah this blog is magnificent i love reading your posts. Stay up the good paintings sir! You realize, lots of persons are searching round for this information, you can help them greatly.

There is something genuinely special about my site!

I regard something genuinely special in this internet site.

“best car movers” on 06/06/2012

This one is actually an attempt at underlying messages if you see where the link they posted was going (see if you can guess)

Im getting a teeny issue. I cant get my reader to pickup your feed, Im using bing reader by the way.

“news” on 05/06/2012

The plea:

I am one of the “self-employed” (I’m a freelance writer) and also the co-owner of a small repair business that I run with my husband. I definitely feel like it’s getting harder and harder to attract clients and find work- especially with my freelancing. It seems there are so many people who are willing to work for much less then I can, and I can’t spend so much time on social networking.

“Landon Ludovico” on 03/06/2012

With hard work!

Wow. This website is cool! How do you make it look like this !?

This one had me confused, there was no obvious link or email address attached. No gain at all except pure exact match anchor text.

this is the way we ball lyrics chorus

“come on get down with the sickness song” on 01/06/2012

Thanks for the advice, I will definetely hve a liok!

obviously like your website but you need to take a look at the spelling on several of your posts. A number of them are rife with spelling issues and I find it very bothersome to tell the reality nevertheless I’ll certainly come back again.

Who the hell markets Zunes?? And why would anyone have so many MP3 players?

Between me and my husband we’ve owned more MP3 players over the years than I can count, including Sansas, iRivers, iPods (classic & touch), the Ibiza Rhapsody, etc. But, the last few years I’ve settled down to one line of players. Why? Because I was happy to discover how well-designed and fun to use the underappreciated (and widely mocked) Zunes are.

“5linx scam” on 30/05/2012

Looking ahead to Look You!

hello!,I love your writing so much! proportion we keep up a correspondence more approximately your article on AOL? I need an expert on this house to solve my problem. May be that is you! Looking ahead to look you.

“cracked seo software” on 30/05/2012

Well that’s all for this week, there are loads more in the bin but that was the best of them. Spam comments are the scurge of any blog but they do add a bit of fun, although to those that do not know the main purpose of these spam comments is to try and gain links back to other websites. Fortunately most people and Akismet know this and mark them as spam immediately as they most often come in garbled and from automatic software.

I better get on and check for spelling mistakes in my posts and how I write!

So, I’ve currently moved jobs and travelling to Edinburgh from Stirling which is a bit of a commute. I’m currently looking at flats in Edinburgh (which is an expensive place to rent!) and relying on classified ad sites to find flats for rent in Edinburgh. I’ve contacted a few and been to see a few and it’s very competitive to say the least, anyway one particular ad caught my eye – a 2 bed flat in central Edinburgh (too central for the price!) for £480 a month, the pictures looked particularly interesting so I sent an email to ask if I could view it. (Sorry if this long and convoluted, but read it all it’s quite funny).

I send this initial mail to ask about the flat:

[ME]

I am interested in viewing. Is it still available? Is it long term let?

Regards,

Malcolm Gibb

This was the reply I received (I’m including this guys email due to his immoral act)

Morgen Walh morgenwalh@gmail.com

Hello

My name is Morgen, I am from Denmark and the flat is still available for rent. It was redecorated last year is looking very nice and clean. Has a fully furnished kitchen, clean and well tidy sitting rooms, laundry room and fully furnished with home utilities like: electric shower, Lounge,Vacuum Cleaner,Toaster, Owen and microwave, dryer, iron, washing machine , refrigerator , dishwasher, power shower, heater, cable ready,TV set and DVD player, Internet connection, equipped kitchen and everything a house needs. I m interested in finding someone clean who can take care of this house more then getting money from renting it if you know what I mean. Till last month the apartment was rented by some students from Germany and now they left and the apartment is available again for rent. The price I want is £480 per month, bills included and I am interested in a long term agreement, minimum 6 month!
If you are decided to view the flat and have the money I could come in the next few days to show you the apartment and maybe sign the tenancy agreement if you like my flat (I am sure you will love it) but first I have to be sure you really do need a place to live because two weeks ago a person from Edinburgh told me he is really interested and he asked me to go to Edinburgh to meet him and sign the tenancy agreement and when I arrived there no person showed up to rent my place and I lost time and money for nothing. Please accept my apologies if I am rude but I hope you will understand me!
I will wait for your e-mail,

Initially I thought – that’s not so strange, he could be telling the truth he might have owned a flat here and moved away and is just renting to tide it over. I decide to email back:

[ME]

Hi Morgen,

Thanks for the information. I am serious about looking for a flat and would ideally want to view the flat as soon as possible. Although to avoid you wasting time it would be good if you could send me as many pictures and info as possible about the flat. Also, because you live so far away what would happen in the situation of say something breaking (like a boiler or plumbing?)? When would be a good day to view the flat?

Regards,

Malcolm Gibb

About 20 minutes later I get this – again – long email:

[Wayne Kerr]

Hello,

I will attach some pictures of the flat, floor plan and also a model of the rental contract! The flat is located on Albany Street, EH1 3PY but I can`t give you the exact address because there`s no one living out there and I`m afraid of thieves and I do apologize for this but I hope you understand me because I`m in Denmark right now! The property benefits from access to beautifully maintained communal gardens and comprises reception room, kitchen with washing machine/tumble dryer, master bedroom with fitted wardrobes and en suite bathroom, second bedroom with fitted wardrobe and bathroom.Parking place is included too!

In the kitchen there is a dishwasher and also a Big fridge freezer! Regarding the council tax I can tell you that it is included in the price of £480 per month and also Sky TV,internet broadband, gas and electricity are also included in this price! I am interested in a minimum six month agreement and I request two months rent in advance plus the equivalent of one month as a refundable deposit which you will get back at the end of the contract.

Regarding the plumbings and all that kind of stuff I can tell you that the flat was recently renovated and all electrical part and plumbings are new so that won`t be necessary any repairs anyway I have a person who can manage this starting from July.

We can sign the rental contract starting from next weekend but I need to be sure that you have serious intentions in renting the flat that`s why I attached here a model of the rental contract and also we can discuss the terms when we will meet!

If you are decided to view the flat let me know because there is another person interested in reserving it!

Kind regards

Although, in this email he attaches several photos(which are obviously of a hotel! – see below) and a tenancy agreement (which is obviously a complete rip off of a template on-line). This is where I get completely suspicious and decide to play on this as well as the fact that the rent is very cheap for central Edinburgh and seems to include council tax, sky and internet! What a deal! See pictures below of this apparently amazing hotel like flat!

Obviously you do not get the above in central Edinburgh for £480 per month, something like this would cost in the region of £750-£900 per month. I was well aware it was now a scam, so I decided to send this back to test it:

[ME]Hi, I am fine with the rental terms, but I will not sign before viewing it. I definately want to view it. What day is suitable for you so I can view the flat? When can you come over to Edinburgh? Could you be here to view the flat on 6.30pm on Monday?

To which he replied:

[Wayne Kerr]I can only come over the weekend so either this one or the next one. When do you want to move? How many persons in total? I have not asked that you sign the agreement before you will se the flat or to give me any money in advance so you don’t have to worry about anything like that

Thanks

I replied:

[ME]
Hi morgen whatever weekend is best for you. I am available to be in Edinburgh whenever. Regards,

Malcolm Gibb

This was the most interesting reply I received next – Of course i will give you all my monies!:

[Wayne Kerr]

Hello,

We could meet and maybe sign the tenancy agreement this Sunday but you see these is due to previous predicament that I have gone through in the past trying to rent the property to some students,I have got to realize so many people are not really in need of an apartment all they do is secure a place in advance, My last experience in trying to rent the property to a particular lady had got me topredicate on these, she made me believe she was willing and ready to get the apartment she even went to the extend of showing me her statement of account, which made me took her for the viewing but after taking her for the viewing, she saw the apartment and got to love it and never wanted to loose it,so she kept pleading i retain it for her because she is not financially composed at the moment, which i did but end up disastrously.

So basically for me to be sure of you been willing and ready to get the apartment I will employ you walk into any Western Union agency and send the total bill cash £1440(two months rent and one month refundable deposit) to your partner’s name (NOT to ME) or your partner can send it to you with location of Edinburgh or any other city in UK,All I need is for you to get back to me with the receipt issued to you after making the transaction so I can confirm it! When we will meet in person to sign the papers we will go together to Western Union and you will withdraw the cash and pay me in hand or you can pay me on Monday by bank transfer! I just need to see that you do have the money available and you do have serious intentions in renting the flat! If the Western Union agent will ask you about the receiver you should tell him that is a relative of yours because the transfer fees will be cheaper! If you will tell them the reason they might consider this a commercial transaction and charge you more. Anyway I will pay for it either you take the flat or not! I will book the flight for Sunday as soon as I have your positive answer !

I do apologise for that but as I told you last time when I arrived to Edinburgh to show the flat to a person everything was a stupid joke and I hope you understand me because I don`t want to waste my time and money on plane tickets..

Regards

Hi,

Its a very simple procedure when you make the transaction with Western Union in person! It takes 5 minutes to fill a paper and send the money to your partner or whoever you trust more and who can come with you at the time when we will meet to show you the flat!

I promise I will reimburse you the 20 30 pounds , western union fees the first thing we meet, even before I will take you for the viewing this way you will know for sure that you will take it back even if you decide not to rent the place. We will then proceed with the viewing, I will provide you with my ownership papers so you can check them out for your peace of mind and if you decide to sign the agreement I will give you the keys and then you will cash out the money and pay me. Also please keep in mind that if the western union agent will ask you about the receiver you should tell them that you are relatives or something because if you will tell the the whole story they might consider this a commercial transaction and charge you more.

With this being said I think we have everything covered. I will be waiting to hear from you

Thanks

[ME]

No problem, I will send the money as soon as you show me booking confirmation of your flight for Sunday, you see I had a flat to view before from someone living in Nigeria, but they did not show up and had booked no flight! I need proof you are coming on Sunday and I will deposit via western union immediately.

I have not replied yet, but it is hilarious the efforts some people will go to. I don’t think anyone in their right mind would send £1440 through Western Union, and I worry for those who would, anyway I intend to meet Morgen on Sunday… but I guess his flight may be cancelled

UPDATE: Well I have noticed over the past few days there have been a lot of people searching ‘Morgen Walh’ in Google and finding this page, I have also had emails from people asking about this scammer. I would advise anyone to ignore any emails from Morgen Walh as it is a total scam.
